In a significant industry development, Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) has gained widespread acceptance, with two major automakers, Toyota (including Lexus) and BMW (encompassing Mini and Rolls-Royce), recently joining the ranks.

Toyota has unveiled its plans to incorporate NACS ports into select Toyota and Lexus battery electric vehicles, commencing in 2025. Furthermore, Toyota is set to offer NACS adapters to customers with electric vehicles reliant on the Combined Charging System (CCS). BMW, in a parallel move, has announced almost identical intentions.

With Toyota and BMW embracing NACS, Stellantis and Volkswagen remain among the very few major automakers yet to adopt this evolving charging standard. A slew of automakers, including General Motors, Ford, Honda, Nissan, Hyundai, Volvo, Mercedes-Benz, Rivian, Polestar, and Fisker, have already declared their intentions to develop electric vehicles capable of tapping into Tesla’s extensive global network, boasting over 50,000 Superchargers.

Stellantis, while contemplating its stance on NACS, expressed its commitment to providing customers with the best possible charging experience. The company, through its Free2Move Charge brand, is dedicated to delivering seamless, user-friendly solutions both at home and on the road through strategic partnerships with charging providers.

Volkswagen, too, hinted at the possibility of aligning with Tesla’s charging standard. The company, which owns Electric America, a charging network, declared its intention to incorporate NACS charging stations into its network by 2025. Volkswagen emphasized the importance of enhancing the charging experience by adhering to open standards and ensuring interoperability for its North American customers.

As NACS continues to gather momentum, it appears increasingly likely that Stellantis and Volkswagen may soon join the growing list of automakers embracing this electrifying shift in the industry.
