Singapore’s Air Force is set to bolster its aerial capabilities with the addition of more advanced stealth fighters while phasing out its older jets. The country plans to procure eight additional F-35 stealth fighters, signaling a strategic move towards modernization amidst escalating regional threats, according to Singapore’s Defense Minister.
Ng Eng Hen, the Defense Minister, announced that the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) will acquire F-35As, a variant of Lockheed Martin Corp jets known for their extended range and larger size. These new acquisitions will complement the 12 F-35Bs previously ordered by Singapore. The F-35B variant possesses the unique capability of vertical take-off and landing, essential for operations on ships or in areas lacking traditional runway infrastructure.
“The F-35As are designed for greater endurance and payload capacity, complementing the F-35Bs’ short take-off and vertical landing capabilities,” explained Ng during his address to parliament.
The procurement of these advanced aircraft underscores Singapore’s proactive stance in response to the evolving capabilities of regional counterparts, particularly China’s People’s Liberation Army Air Force, which has been deploying sophisticated aircraft like the J-20B.
Malcolm Davis, a senior analyst at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, noted that this move places Singapore’s Air Force at the forefront of Southeast Asian aerial forces. With countries like Australia, South Korea, Japan, and the United States also operating F-35s in the region, there are potential opportunities for collaborative maintenance and support arrangements.
While specific financial details were not disclosed, the purchase signifies a significant investment. Lockheed Martin, the manufacturer of the F-35, refrained from commenting on the deal’s value but expressed gratitude for Singapore’s selection of the F-35A as part of its future fighter aircraft fleet.
Singapore’s Defense Ministry likewise chose not to disclose financial specifics, but it’s evident that the country’s defense budget will see an increase of 2.5% in the upcoming fiscal year, reaching S$20.2 billion. Ng emphasized the imperative of such investments, citing the rising risk of regional conflicts in the coming years.
The introduction of these advanced stealth fighters aligns with Singapore’s commitment to maintaining a robust defense posture in the face of evolving security challenges, solidifying its position as a key player in the Asia-Pacific region.
